Introduction

Dr. Neagoy's longtime dream of combining her love for the arts and the sciences in the creation of innovative mathematics videos for teachers and students has come true.

Expertise and Clients

Dr. Neagoy’s experience with the design, creation, and delivery of educational videos began back in 1996 when Tom Rollins, Founder and CEO of The Teaching Company, invited her to become part of the SperStar Teacher Series. More specifically, The Teaching Company was in need of an expert to conceive of a new, state-of-the-art video course on Algebra. Dr. Neagoy welcomed the challenge: over a period of four months, she designed, created, and taught 30 thirty-minute lessons, on video. To this day, her Algebra video series continues to be a very popular mathematics course for the Teaching Company, www.teach12.com.

Following the success of her Algebra series, Dr. Neagoy was approached by the Program Manager of the Annenberg/CPB Channel and asked to be one of four national mathematics content experts for two separate programs for teachers: one in mathematics (Mathematics: What's the Big Idea?), the other in assessment (Assessment in Math and Science: What's the Point?). In the late 1990s, these two eight-part series were aired live on the Annenberg/CPB channel, allowing for live call-in questions from sites across the country. Later, these series were edited for video and are now available for sale at www.learner.org.

Dr. Neagoy has continued to provide her extensive experience and varied expertise to numerous private and public organizations, dedicated to designing and creating educational courses/programs for film, television, or video. These include the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), for whom she had done a variety of work over the years, Center City Film and Video (CCFV) in Philadelphia, WGBH in Boston, Discovery Education in Maryland, and UnitedStreaming, Discovery Education's online digital video-on-demand service for teachers, parents and other educators.

In November 2005, Dr. Neagoy’s MathMagic Show, an original creation, was filmed by Discovery Education. Once edited and combined with a personal interview, it will be available for download at www.UnitedStreaming.com starting in February 2006.

Dr. Neagoy’s areas of expertise include big-picture conception, creative writing, technical writing, artistic delivery, multidisciplinary connections, especially the connection between the arts and sciences.

Algebra Videos

Dr. Neagoy was hired as a leading mathematics lecturer by The Teaching Company (www.teach12.com) to design, write, and teach a multimedia algebra course for the 21st century. This video series, originally designed for high school students is now selling on the national and international markets. It also makes for a valuable resource, especially for parents and teachers seeking real-world algebra applications or the integration of graphing technology with school algebra.

While Algebra I was originally designed to target high school students, many "returning adults" have purchased this course for their own edification. We have received numerous letters and e-mail messages from such customers praising not only the content and approach of the course but also the excitement, passion, and expertise with which Dr. Neagoy infects, injects, and infuses her audience.”

“Dr. Neagoy: You are a great teacher! I am working my way through the Algebra 1 tapes you did for the Teaching Company and they are great. …    Thank you for your outstanding work on the Algebra 1 tapes.”

“Ms. Neagoy, Thank you very much for the wonderful series you did for the Teaching Company.  I purchased the tapes and am using them with my children.  Your approach to algebra instruction has really made my job fun and exciting.  Your "mathematics laboratory" and real life problems were really nice to watch.  Your approach is really extraordinary and has my kids (and me) wanting more.  Thank you again.  Your talents are enviable.”

Mathematics Videos

Dr. Neagoy was among four national, mathematics content specialists selected by The Annenberg/CPB Channel (www.learner.org) to design, write, and teach eight live, interactive workshops broadcast nationwide on the Annenberg/CPB Channel. Workshop titles include Data: Posing Answers and Finding Questions, Algebra: It Begins in Kindergarten, and The Future of Mathematics: Ferns and Galaxies. The eight two-hour workshops were then edited and recorded, and are now available on video as invaluable teacher resources.

Mathematics: What’s the Big Idea?

“What do quilts have to do with palaces? When is a third more than a half? K-8 teachers of mathematics contemplate these and other provocative questions in the workshop, which offers motivation and tools for teachers who want to explore new ways of teaching math. Using a variety of models, activities, and video clips, this workshop encourages participants to reflect upon their own practice and discuss ideas for innovation in teaching.”

The Annenberg/CPB Channel

“Dear Dr. Neagoy:  Thanks for the Quality! While channel surfing yesterday, I bumped into a television discussion by you on chaos and fractals.  (The TV show appeared to be the last in a series entitled "Mathematics: What's the Big Idea?")  I was spellbound by the clarity, enthusiasm and philosophy of your presentation.  Any brief talk that weaves connections between the history of mathematics, Bertrand Russell and Marilyn vos Savant is sufficiently eclectic to intrigue me and to resonate with me in ways that I shall retain for a long time.”

Assessment Videos

Dr. Neagoy was among three national assessment specialists selected by The Annenebrg/CPB Channel (www.learner.org) to design, write, and teach eight live, interactive workshops broadcast nationwide on the Annenberg/CPB Channel. Workshop titles include Will This Be on the Test? -- Knowing vs. Understanding, Is This Going to Count? -- Embedded Assessment, and I Didn't Know This Was an English Class! -- Connections Across the Disciplines. The eight two-hour workshops were then edited and recorded, and are now available on video as invaluable teacher resources.

Assessment in math and Science: What’s the Point?

"Will this be on the test?" "Is this going to count?" How often do students ask these questions? This workshop examines current assessment issues and strategies in K-12 math and science classrooms. Through video segments of real classrooms interspersed with lively discussions of practicing teachers and content experts, see how teachers deal with common issues and discover ways to use assessment to improve teaching and learning”

 The Annenberg/CPB Channel.

“Monica did an excellent job as the on-camera content guide for our 8-part video workshop, “Math: What’s the Big Idea?”  Her clear communication of the material combined with her understanding of the needs of teachers made the workshop a resounding success.”
