Having been educated both in the US and abroad, attended French schools and US universities, worked with school systems, taught in institutions of higher learning, had two, long parallel careers in both the arts and the sciences, mastered several languages and been acquainted with school systems around the world, I bring a unique perspective to the learning and teaching of mathemtics at all levels.
Keynote
addresses for a mathematics conferences Over the past several years, I have been honored by numerous invitations to open or close national and international mathematics conferences. Popular keynote topics I have given across the US or abroad include "The Mathematics of Beauty and the Beauty of Mathematics" and "Fascinating Fractals and Captivating Chaos." Two others that will be available later in 2006 are entitled "Hidden Mathematics in Our Everyday Life" and "The Amazing History of Numbers." All presentations are multimedia, dynamic, thought-provoking, and engaging; they span a variety of disciplines--mathematics, science, history, art, philosophy, etc., and betray my double passion for mathematics and the performing arts. While I have a number of engaging presentations to offer, it is always a challenge and pleasure to create a new talk tailored specifically to your conference theme.
MathMagic shows for all audiences Drawing from my professional theatre experience (see My Theatre Life) and my extensive scientific career (see my CV ), I have combined my passions for both the performing arts and mathematics into the creation of unique math shows that infuse, infect and inject my audiences (from primary students to adults) with a fascination for mathematics and a curiosity to delve deeper into the subject at hand. "MathMagic" (for ES and MS students) and "Puzzles, Paradoxes and Perplexities" (for HS students and adults) are two shows that have garnered much acclaim in recent years. Worthy of note, Discovery Education (DE) has recently filmed my Mathmagic show at a public middle school, in Alexandria Virginia. DE will edit the show, along with a personal interview, and will soon make the abridged version available--online--to schools, via its UnitedStreaming program
Institutes/Workshops/Courses (for teacher PD)
I have worked with teachers of all grade bands (K-12), diverse backgrounds, languages and cultures, with students of public, private and parochial schools, and in a variety of locations including DC, VA, MD, MA, CA, etc. Regardless of the topics (see a partial list of institute/course titles below), I enjoy planting seeds of fascination and curiosity and infusing teachers with my contagious passion for mathematics, with the hope that they in turn will do the same with their students. One of my greatest rewards was the reaction of a 25-year, DCPS veteran teacher who once told me, with tears in his eyes: "You have changed my life: I never thought that after 25 years of teaching my view of mathematics could change so dramatically. You have given me a new appreciation of mathematics." (see Clients and Testimonials). Examples of Institute and Course Titles: --Math Modeling with State-of-the-Art Technologies (for secondary teachers) --Math Modeling with Discrete Mathematics (for secondary teachers) --Revisiting the Fundamentals of Elementary Mathematics (for elementary teachers) --Integrating Manipulatives in the Learning/Teaching of Mathematics (for elementary teachers) --Integrating Graphing Technologies in the Learning/Teaching of Mathematics (for K-12 teachers) --Teaching, Textbook and Technology (for K-12 teachers) --Bringing the Math Standards Alive in Your Classroom (for K-12 teachers) --Understanding the Fundamentals of Algebra (for K-12 teachers)
Creative/technical writing (for TV/DVD/video courses, etc.) I have had extensive experience with the various stages of creating live TV or video/DVD courseS (see Videos page): (1) conception, (2) creation, (3) writing, (4) design, (5) delivery, and (6) critique. Media companies I've worked with and consulted for include: the Public Broadcasting Services (PBS), Discovery Education , The Teaching Company, the Annenberg/CPB Channel, The Learning Channel, Center City Film and Video, and WGBH . The various stages of challenge, problem solving and creativity, from course conception to course completion, resemble the very stages of creating an original play--from initial idea to opening-night performance. I have done a lot of professional work in both mathematics learning/teaching videos and live theatre (see My Theatre Life) and feel that my expertise from each career has enhanced the other. More specifically, my analytical skills enrich my artistic experiences and my creative skills enrich my mathematics education experiences. In addition to writing for television and video, I have worked on a variety of other educational and artistic projects that involve professional writing such as proposal writing and script writing. My success rate in proposal writing is high and some of the original plays I have co-written received prestigious performing-arts awards (see My Theatre Life).
Mathematics and mathematics education consulting I am often asked: "What does a math consultant do?" While I cannot answer for other "math consultants," I can tell you a little about what this math consultant does. My work takes on various forms, and newly acquired knowledge and skills are often the result of a cutting-edge challenge I welcome. I draw on a variety of expertise (e.g. work in academia--US and other universities, schools and theatre, work with teachers, students, principals, administrators, and parents), do work for a variety of organizations (e.g. national and international organizations, and media production companies), and tackle a variety of interesting forward-looking projects (e.g. multidisciplinary--especialy, bridging arts and sciences, professional-development, writing, and media projects). Whatever the project (see BIO for a detailed list), it often involves several players and stake-holders from the scientific and education communities, addresses aspects of teaching and learning quality mathematics and always strives for excellence in mathematics for all!
